The Chicago Sky crumbled down the stretch to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2018. They won just three of their 16 games after the Olympic break as the franchise dealt with the Marina Mabrey trade and a season-ending injury to Angel Reese. The Sky arguably exceeded expectations after trading Kahleah Copper in the offseason, which made Thursday’s decision to fire head Teresa Weatherspoon even more baffling.

The Sky must upgrade their roster this offseason, but they have a strong foundation. Angel Reese was exceptional as a rookie and is already one of the best rebounders in the W. Chennedy Carter found a home as an absolute bucket. Kamilla Cardoso was a strong starting center as a rookie. Chicago must nail their 2025 draft pick and find talent in free agency to improve their roster.

Firing Weatherspoon drew a post from Angel on social media, and the Sky’s star pressured the organization to get this right.

Angel Reese makes it clear Sky need to nail their coaching hire

The 22-year-old praised Weatherspoon and offered support in a social media post after the news broke.

The Hall of Famer's belief in Reese helped her shine as a rookie, and the last thing any franchise wants is their best player to be angry at the front office's decisions. Reese did not outwardly say she wanted Weatherspoon to remain the Sky's head coach, but she certainly implied it.

The pressure is now on the decision-makers to nail this head coaching hire. The Sky need someone capable of transforming their roster into a contender in short order or there may soon be another coaching change in the Windy City.

There is massive potential for the Sky’s latest move to blow up in their faces.

Sky may have missed an important lesson from the Spurs and Gregg Popovich

The legendary head coach was nearly fired after the Spurs got off to a slow start in the 1998-99 season. A win in Houston saved his job and started a run. San Antonio went on to win the championship in Pop’s third season, and he is still leading the franchise more than one-quarter century later.

Reese is a fan of the longtime Spurs coach, which makes this move even more puzzling.

The Sky did not give Teresa Weatherspoon enough time. She was a Hall of Famer player and would have figured out how to be a successful coach. Weatherspoon brought the best out of their three building blocks and nearly made the playoffs. It was a strong season given their talent, which made the firing even more questionable.

Angel Reese’s post puts even more pressure on the Chicago Sky. They already have massive expectations, but nailing this coaching hire is a must. If not, Reese could become unsettled as her franchises struggles to build a contender around her. Weatherspoon needed more time, and this head-scratching move will have massive implications for years. Stay tuned to see how it plays out.
