Sky cannot let Angel Reese convince them to draft ill-fitting prospect in 2025
By Tyler Watts
The Chicago Sky had a disastrous end to the season that eliminated them from the playoffs. It started by trading Marina Mabrey to the Sun during the Olympic break. Dumping a starter and key playmaker was not wise. Chicago won just three of their final 16 games, and Angel Reese struggled before suffering a season-ending injury.
The Sky snapped a five-year streak of making the playoffs, but the rebuild is on. Reese is one of the brightest young stars in all of sports. She was one of the best rebounders in the W as a 22-year-old rookie, and the Bayou Barbie will improve her game. The Sky have Chennedy Carter and Kamilla Cardoso locked in around her, but need more talent.
Expect Chicago to build around Angel Reese. The 6’3 forward has decision-making input and believes in her GM skills. Reese may want her franchise to select her college teammate in the 2025 WNBA Draft, but the Sky cannot let that happen.
Sky cannot take Aneesah Morrow in the 2025 WNBA Draft
Chicago needs a point and shooting around their core. Lindsay Allen and Carter are the only two players on their current roster to average over three assists per game in 2024 and neither topped four. Finding someone to run the show is a must, and no team made fewer 3-pointers than the Sky. Without shooting and playmaking, it will be difficult to win.
The Sky are in the lottery and could still win the Paige Bueckers sweepstakes. Chicago will have a 17.8 percent chance at the top selection and is guaranteed to be in the top four. There will be plenty of talent available, but Reese’s former teammate just does not fit.
Morrow was a two-time All-American for DePaul before transferring to LSU. She averaged 16.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 32.7 minutes per game as a junior. The 6’1 forward deserves to be a lottery selection, but Chicago cannot take her.
Morrow has made 80 NCAA 3-pointers in three years but has connected on just 24.3 percent of her outside attempts. Reese and Cardoso are non-shooters, and the Sky cannot afford to have a third subpar option. The floor will get too cramped and scoring will become a bigger problem.
Aneesah Morrow profiles more as a frontcourt option and elite defender. She needs to go to a team that can maximize her skill set with shooters and versatile perimeter options. The Sky reuniting her with Angel Reese would be a disastrous outcome.
Reese must do what is best for her former teammate. There will be several quality options available in the 2025 WNBA Draft lottery, and it will be on the Sky to nail the selection. They did it with Reese, but can the franchise do it again? It won’t be easy, and Morrow is certainly not the answer. No matter what their star says, the franchise must avoid drafting a non-shooter if they want to become serious title contenders.
