Sky have perfect free agent target to turn their fortunes around
By Tyler Watts
The Chicago Sky missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018, but could quickly vault back into contention. Angel Reese was an All-Star as a rookie and plans to improve her game this offseason. Kamilla Cardoso had a strong first year at the five and Chennedy Carter is an absolute bucket. Chicago needs pieces that push them toward contention.
The Sky are in the lottery and guaranteed a top four selection. They have a 17.8 percent chance of landing the top pick and getting Paige Bueckers. That would instantly transform their roster. No matter where they land, Chicago should get a talent. The franchise must make sure their player fits.
The Sky need multiple guards to round out their rotation, and the franchise is not expected to be in contention. With the salary cap expected to skyrocket in 2026, no player will want a multi-year contract this summer. Chicago may struggle to find talent in free agency, but a strong role player could help them chase a playoff spot in 2025.
Natisha Hiedeman is the perfect free-agent role player for the Sky
Chicago desperately needs shooting because their frontcourt of Reese and Cardoso do not space the floor. The Sky made the fewest 3-pointers in the W in 2024 and cannot afford to have another non-shooter on the floor.
Beyond that, Chicago was 11th in offensive rating and 11th in assists. They have a clear need for playmaking and someone who can provide offensive punch.
Heideman played five years with the Connecticut Sun before being traded to the Lynx in January. She got just 15.2 minutes per game this season on arguably the deepest team in the league and could be looking for a larger opportunity elsewhere when she hits free agency this offseason.
Heideman is a career 37.7 percent 3-point shooter with a versatile skill set. In 2022 and 2023 combined, she averaged 8.8 points, 2.9 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 steal in 25.9 minutes per game. The 5’8 guard can operate as a floor spacer and secondary creator. She would provide more room for Reese inside and allows Carter to get buckets.
The 27-year-old came off the bench this season after starting in the previous two. She is happy to accept her role and will thrive in it. Heideman has never missed the playoffs in her first six WNBA seasons and knows how to help her team win. The Sun made the finals in 2022 with Heideman playing 26.2 minutes per game.
The Chicago Sky would love to add a marquee free agent, but those players are unlikely to join a lottery team. They should try to land a difference-maker in the draft and find role players who fit in free agency. Natisha Heideman is the perfect option if the franchise can convince her to come to the Windy City.
