How much more can the Chicago Sky improve their roster before the start of their 2025 campaign?
The Sky have put in the work to strengthen their squad around their bright young stars in forward Angel Reese and center Kamilla Cardoso. They added some much-needed veteran options in the backcourt to strengthen their depth at the one and the two. They added two 2nd-round selections in this year's WNBA Draft after shipping guard Dana Evans to the Las Vegas Aces. They hired Tyler Marsh, a proven player development coach and a former assistant for the Aces, to take on their head coaching duties in November.
The Sky are seemingly on the cusp of having the solid foundation they need to take the next step into playoff contention. They hold two 1st-round picks in the 2025 Draft, which features plenty of guard options for them to choose from to pair with their big duo of the future. They will have plenty of cap room to work with, along with the two rookie deals of Cardoso and Reese, heading into what could be an eventful 2026 offseason. Chicago still has about $400,000 of cap room and three open roster spots to work with, meaning they can still add a little more firepower before the start of the 2025 WNBA season.
Add more consistent shooting around Angel Reese
No team can have too much shooting or scoring power.
While the Sky have addressed their need for more consistent shooting with their newest additions, they could certainly stand to add more. Chicago's 3-point attack could use an extra boost after losing some of the potency it had during the Sky's 2023 regular-season run, when they tied for second place in the WNBA with a long-range percentage of 37.2%. Their 32.3% from the arc last season would be the second-lowest in team history. They only placed ahead of the 2006 Sky squad that hit a league-low 29.3% of their 3-point tries.
Adding more consistent shooting options through the draft or from free agency will be key in the growth of Reese, who shined in her rookie season and gained her first All-Star selection. The former Big Ten and SEC star did a decent job at finding players on the perimeter and in the mid-range last season as she averaged 1.9 assists per game. Signing or drafting more perimeter shooting specialists can help Reese grow as a passer in the paint and at the top of the arc. It will also strengthen the Sky as a whole as they look to restart their playoff streak for the first time since 2023.
