Chicago has filled out a majority of its roster through a few crafty trades and signings. It strengthened its offense and guard depth with the additions of guards Rebecca Allen and Kia Nurse. It brought back a team legend to run the point in guard Courtney Vandersloot. It retained a newer addition in forward Michaela Onyenwere and unloaded a few players who were extended qualifying offers. The Windy City squad added two second-round draft picks in the processes, giving them more flexibility when addressing its final few open roster spots.
The Sky have nine players signed to their squad this season and about $400,000 of cap space remaining, or the 7th-most in the WNBA. Seven of those contracts expire by the 2026 season, which is slated to be an eventful offseason with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. They have three open roster spots remaining and plenty more for training camp deals before they begin their 2025 campaign.
Add backup forwards, point guard
Vandersloot, a 12-year starter for the Sky, will fit well as a starter on her former squad after suiting up with the New York Liberty for two seasons. The 7-time assist champion was a much-needed signing for a team in need of a floor general and a guard who can elevate the games of forward Angel Reese and center Kamilla Cardoso. Vandersloot highlights a 2025 Sky roster that includes plenty of veteran options, including a more consistent big in center Elizabeth Williams.
The Sky have guard Moriah Jefferson on the roster. Jefferson, who joined former Chicago center Imani Boyette on the 2016 WNBA All-Rookie team, played in 14 games for the Sky last season. She logged a season-high four assists in an August loss to the Phoenix Mercury, which saw Reese drop 19 points and bring down 20 rebounds in the Footprint Center.
Chicago could still use some extra depth that the point, small forward and power forward spots as the offseason continues. They could look to the few remaining open free agents or use their newly-acquired draft picks to quickly add depth. Forwards Isabelle Harrison and Brianna Turner, who both suited up for the Sky last year, are unrestricted free agents. While only a few of the 2nd-rounders from the 2024 WNBA draft returned to their respective squads, Chicago could look to players like Notre Dame forward Maddy Westbeld or NC State guard Saniya Rivers should they strike out before April's draft.
