LSU forward Aneesah Morrow logged 20 points and 18 rebounds as the Tigers defeated UAlbany on Sunday.
Morrow, a former 3-star recruit in the Class of 2021, added two assists and one steal. She hit eight of her 13 shots from the floor and sank four of her five shots from the free throw line. Junior guard Flau'Jae Johnson, who won an NCAA championship with now-Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese, added 15 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play.
Morrow is leading the Tigers in rebounds and steals per game with 14.3 and 2.7, respectively. She is only adding to a double-double streak that goes back to the beginning of December. Morrow has logged a double-double in all but two of her matchups this season. While she doesn't shoot from the 3-point line at as high of a volume as her time at DePaul, Morrow hit a steady four of her last six shots from long range against Seton Hall and UIC earlier this month. The 6-foot-1 forward and Chicago native hails from Chicago's Simeon Career Academy. The school produced Chicago-born standouts in former Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose and a Duke star in forward Jabari Parker.
The Sky selected their frontcourt of the future in forward Angel Reese and center Kamilla Cardoso in last year's draft. It could be risky to add the Chicago-born collegiate star after adding the two rookie phenoms, especially as the Sky are in need of guard talent who can shoot and create their own opportunities.
But if adding talented Chicago-born players has worked once for the Sky in the past, who's to say it can't work again?
The Sky have had some luck when adding hometown stars in years past. Guard Allie Quigley, a Joliet native who built a notable career at DePaul, quickly became a standout 3-point shooting threat in her 10 years with the Sky. Forward Candace Parker added a second championship to her Hall-of-Fame resume when signed with her hometown squad in 2021.
Morrow would only strengthen a Sky squad that proved to be one of the WNBA's best rebounding teams in 2024. She could also help boost the team's defense, which dipped from the top-4 defensive rating it had achieved in 2022. If the Sky can select one of their guards of the future with their No. 3 selection, Morrow can be a fun option to look out for if she falls to the Sky later in the first round of the 2025 WNBA Draft.
