During a big offseason that will feature the Golden State Valkyries’ expansion draft, CBA negotiations, and the inaugural season of Unrivaled, several WNBA teams will have to make big decisions. The Chicago Sky are one of those teams.

The Sky have six free agents—three unrestricted and three restricted—on the roster and must decide who to keep around and who to let walk away. Chicago may not have made the playoffs, but they have two future stars in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso and will get another big name in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

The organization must figure out how to build around its stars and prepare for a big future. Expectations will only continue to grow, and that often means having to let go of certain free agents to allow others to join the team

Most likely to return: Michaela Onyenwere

The Chicago Sky were not a good 3-point shooting team last season, converting only 32.3 percent of their attempts. That ranked ninth across the league. The Sky’s most important players in the 2024 season were Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, and Chennedy Carter. Cardoso does not shoot threes at all, and Reese and Carter did not shoot the three well.

So, the Sky need as many 3-point shooters on the supporting cast as they can. Michaela Onyenwere only averaged two 3-point attempts per game but converted 36.8 percent of them. She was the team’s best 3-point shooter behind Dana Evans and Rachel Banham, who came to Chicago at the trade deadline, and claimed a spot in the starting lineup to close the season.

Onyenwere is a restricted free agent this offseason, and if the price is right, there is no reason why the Sky shouldn’t bring her back. They can still use her production off the bench.

Likely to return: Chennedy Carter

Chennedy Carter is the biggest name on the Sky’s list of free agents. She was the team’s leading scorer in a personal bounce-back season. Carter was a big part of the Sky’s offense and already said that she wanted to return to Chicago.

That was before the Sky fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon, though. Carter formed a strong bond with Weatherspoon, and the change may affect her decision. On the other hand, several players seemed excited about the Sky’s hiring of Tyler Marsh, and Carter is a restricted free agent. So, it is still likely that fans will get to see her in a Sky uniform next season.

Might not return: Isabelle Harrison

Isabelle Harrison was a solid backup at the forward spot for the Chicago Sky in the 2024 season. She averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds in 16.3 minutes over 36 games. While it was a successful season for Harrison, it also marked the fewest minutes she has averaged since her rookie season.

Harrison is an unrestricted free agent and will likely explore the market to see if there is a bigger role available for her elsewhere. If it is not and the Sky cannot find a significant upgrade, she might be back in Chicago, though.

Unlikely to return: Brianna Turner

Brianna Turner only played 27 games for the Sky and only averaged 9.4 minutes per game. The previous season, she averaged 26.3 minutes with the Phoenix Mercury. With her minutes, her production also dropped dramatically, and Turner has no 3-point shot.

Turner and the Sky just do not seem like a good fit, and there is really no reason for the team to re-sign her.

Very unlikely to return: Diamond DeShields

In 2024, Diamond DeShields returned for her second stint with the Chicago Sky. She is not the same scorer she used to be, averaging only 4.5 points per game on 34.8 percent shooting from the field and 17.3 percent from three. DeShields also played the fewest minutes in her career.

The Sky need an upgrade, and DeShields could use a fresh start. So, fans should not expect her to return in free agency.

Least likely to return: Dana Evans

Dana Evans is a restricted free agent this offseason but is still not likely to return to the Sky. Evans began the season as a starter, playing a big role for the team.

Then, drama surfaced. Trade rumors emerged, Evans lost her starting spot, and her agent made some frustrated comments on X about the Sky’s treatment of Evans.

Considering all that, it looks like Evans's time with the Sky will be over soon.
