Chicago Sky forward continues to improve free agency value with overseas play
By Elaine Blum
The Chicago Sky may not have made the playoffs in the 2024 WNBA season, but they still saw plenty of encouraging things from their players. Angel Reese broke several records and made her first All-Star appearance, Kamilla Cardoso proved why she was such a high draft pick, and Chennedy Carter put together one of her best seasons in the WNBA.
And yet, the Sky’s future is still somewhat up in the air. The organization replaced head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season and several players are set to enter free agency. Out of that group, Dana Evans, Diamond DeShields, and Brianna Turner will almost certainly not return to the Sky in 2025.
The biggest free agent for the Sky this season is Chennedy Carter. She was the team’s leading scorer but is entering restricted free agency. When Weatherspoon was still the team’s head coach, Carter said she wanted to return to Chicago. Has that changed now? Only Carter knows that. Her future with the Sky is still up in the air.
Another free agent whose future with the Sky is still uncertain is Isabelle Harrison. Harrison was a solid backup for Chicago, but she played the fewest minutes since her rookie season and may want to find a team willing to give her more playing time. Her play with the Sky certainly drew some attention, and she is continuing to improve her free agency value while playing in Europe.
Isabelle Harrison has already put together some big games with ZVVZ USK Praha
This offseason, Harrison is playing for the Czech club USK Praha in the EuroLeague and the Czech Women’s Basketball League. Harrison has played a total of 11 games so far (four against EuroLeague teams) and putting up some solid numbers. Her last two EuroLeague games were not very inspiring but she is still averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1 steal per game.
Meanwhile, Harrison looks very strong in the games against ZBL competition. Over seven games, she has only scored less than 10 points once and put up 17 or more points three times. She is also rebounding the ball incredibly well, averaging 6.9 rebounds per game.
Harrison may not be able to space the floor, but several teams in the WNBA would still love to have a forward who can score and rebound the ball. The Sky desperately need more shooting and thus might look for a better 3-point shooter to take Harrison’s place this offseason. If they cannot find that and want to keep her around, they will likely have to compete with some other teams, especially if Harrison continues to put up solid numbers in Europe.
