Can Michaela Onyenwere be the glue player the Sky need this season?

The Chicago Sky's training camp competition won't just be limited to its newer rookies and training camp signees. A handful of players could take on their fifth and final starting spot alongside four potential locks in Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins. From a more familiar face in Michaela Onyenwere to a pair of new taller guards, Chicago must find their final piece of the puzzle before facing off against the Indiana Fever on May 17.

Chicago worked through a few options at the three spot following the departure of Kahleah Copper, who became an All-Star staple for the Sky following a blockbuster trade in 2017. Onyenwere, who was part of the package that sent Copper to the Phoenix Mercury, worked her way into a full-time starter following starts from Diamond DeShields and Marina Mabrey. The 6-foot forward will need to prove she can continue being the starter the Sky need as she enters the final year of her contract.

Will she be the forward the Sky need for their 2025 campaign? Or will Chicago need to look elsewhere for their starting small forward of the near future?

Michaela Onyenwere can be the glue forward the Sky need this season

The Sky will need all the help they can get if they are to find their way back into the playoffs.

Onyenwere, who saw her role increase as an unsung hero for the Sky, could be the forward they need to hold their starting lineup together this season. She will be a needed part in revolutionizing the Sky's 3-point attack after they fell to near the bottom of the league in a few marks last season. The former New York Liberty forward already has one season with Reese and Cardoso under her belt. She worked well with Cardoso, who assisted her a team-most 13 times last season, while making her living from the inside and the 3-point line.

Even if she does find a role as a sub during her second season in Chicago, Onyenwere can be a valuable part of a Sky squad in need of consistent play across the board. The Sky cycled through a number of starting lineups as Chennedy Carter broke out into a scoring star and Mabrey was shipped off to the Sun. With some much-needed depth and a solid young core, it won't be long before a number of players can show off their skills on an up-and-coming Eastern Conference squad.
