Could the Chicago Sky be primed for a bounce-back season following their most recent transitional years?
The Sky will have a number of talented options duking it out for their two open roster spots. A familiar face in Morgan Bertsch could find her way back onto her old squad should the stars align in her favor. A few former college standouts who are looking for their first shots in the W will look to compete against several veterans at the professional level, including an Australian star in guard Alex Wilson. It will take everything they've got to prove they can roll with some of the Sky's locks for their opening-day roster, including two of the league's brightest young bigs in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.
Reese, a superstar at LSU who showed signs of improvement with her Unrivaled squad, will need to continue elevating her stardom as the Sky enter a pivotal year in their latest rebuilding era. Should everything fall into place, Chicago can make a much-needed push for the playoffs before adding to their talented tandem with a high-level draft pick in 2026.
How can Reese build upon her game heading into the 2025 season? Will she have the answers the Sky need to start their ascent in the WNBA standings?
A jumper a game keeps the doubters at bay
Reese must build upon the confidence she showed from the midrange in her Unrivaled stint for the Sky to truly unlock their potential on offense.
Whether it be off the catch or creating her own opportunities, Reese must unleash her jumper as the Sky brought in a few creative playmakers to play alongside her. The 6-foot-3 forward showed a willingness to take shots from the midrange in her rookie campaign, where she would try to shake off defenders with a jab or two or throw up a shot off a quick pass. With a passing specialist in Courtney Vandersloot and a former LSU teammate in Hailey Van Lith, Reese could start taking the bounds she needs to space the floor effectively.
The Sky could also rely on Bertsch or a second-round selection in Notre Dame's Maddy Westbeld if Reese still needs time to iron things out. Either way, Chicago can be a much-improved jump shooting squad from the previous season, which will be crucial in competing in a strong Eastern Conference featuring last year's champions in the New York Liberty.
