The Chicago Sky are working hard to become a popular destination for free agents and some of the top players in the league. Angel Reese’s development and the addition of Courtney Vandersloot, Ariel Atkins, Rebecca Allen, and Kia Nurse will certainly help with that.

The Sky only won 13 games in the 2024 season but should look much better this year, as they take the first steps to building a competitive team around Angel Reese.

Reese has not been shy with her efforts to recruit players, especially while playing for Unrivaled, and already has her eyes on one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.

Angel Reese hinted at wish to play with DiJonai Carrington

When DiJonai Carrington appeared on the latest episode of Angel Reese’s podcast Unapologetically Angel, the topic of her and Reese playing together came up. First, Carrington revealed that she almost chose Maryland over Baylor after she graduated from Stanford, which would have made her and Reese teammates in college.

Later in the podcast, the conversation turned to the WNBA. Reese congratulated Carrington on getting the chance to play on the same team as her girlfriend NaLyssa Smith in the 2025 WNBA season but admitted that she was a little sad about not being able to play with Carrington as well.

“We’ll be teammates one day,” Reese added

Carrington is about to enter her fifth WNBA season and the first not on the Connecticut Sun. With the Sun, she went from a second-round pick who played only a few minutes to a full-time starter on one of the more competitive teams in the league. She was named the 2024 Most Improved Player and received All-Defensive First Team honors.

As a big, Reese will always need talented two-way guards around her, and Carrington is just that. She is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and often draws some of the toughest assignments possible. Offensively, Carrington can get to the rim and put up double-digits consistently.

The main part of her game that could use some work is her 3-point shot. Carrington shot only 25 percent on 2.7 attempts in the 2024 season after averaging 37.1 percent on 1.9 attempts in the previous season. If she can add a more reliable 3-point shot to her arsenal, Carrington could quickly become one of the top two-way players in the league.

It would also make her a perfect fit next to Angel Reese. Especially while paired with Kamilla Cardoso, Reese needs as many 3-point shooters around her as possible

Mentality-wise, Reese and Carrington would also be a great fit. Both are unapologetically themselves and do not back down from any challenge. Even without an improved 3-point shot from Carrington, having her and Reese on the same team would make for an energetic and competitive combination.

The next time Carrington will be a free agent will be in 2026, giving Reese plenty of time to continue recruiting her.
