Sky still have massive problem after attacking offseason weakness

The Sky seemed to put themselves back on the map with the additions of a few former All-Star guards. Chicago invested in the present when it traded a handful of draft picks for guard Ariel Atkins last month. Courtney Vandersloot returned to the team where she started her WNBA career in January. Kia Nurse and Rebecca Allen added to the team's long-range arsenal along with guard Rachel Banham, who split time between the Sky and the Connecticut Sun last season.

The Sky will have plenty of talented guards to call upon during their 2025 campaign as they look to strengthen their roster around forward Angel Reese and center Kamilla Cardoso. While Chicago will have plenty to look out for in the 2026 offseason with a multitude of expiring contracts, it will at least have dependable starters to rely on this year as it looks to make a playoff push before a key year in the WNBA. Are the Sky ready to be competitive in a league that saw plenty of star players change teams? Or do they still need to add more firepower before they take to Wintrust Arena in May?

Chicago must add more 3-point shooting

Even with their newest additions, the Sky may have to strengthen their 3-point shooting around Reese and Cardoso.

The Sky have been able to rely on the knock-down 3-point shooting of Vandersloot and Allie Quigley in the past, but lacked a surefire shooter after trading away guards Marina Mabrey and Kahleah Copper last year. Chicago finished the 2024 season near the bottom of the league in a few key categories from the arc. They ranked near the bottom of the league in 3-point percentage and attempts after an up-and-down year from long range. It saw sizable changes from the highs it had reached the season before, which saw guards like Copper and Courtney Williams nearly reach or break their career highs in single-season 3-pointers.

Chicago still has a few draft picks and about $200,000 in remaining cap space to add two more players to its roster. While Chicago may need to look for a few more consistent and high-volume 3-point shooters as they fill out their training camp spots, forward Morgan Bertsch hit over 44% of her 3-point shots during the 28 games she played with the Sky in 2023. With Reese and Cardoso showing off their star power in Unrivaled and the Women's Chinese Basketball Association, it will be up to the Sky and head coach Tyler Marsh to optimize Chicago's shooting potential after going all-in and investing in a winning roster this offseason.
