The Chicago Sky rounded out their 2025 WNBA Draft class with the selections of Notre Dame forward Maddy Westbeld and Texas A&M guard Aicha Coulibaly.
Westbeld, the No. 16 pick in this year's draft, ended her five seasons with Notre Dame with averages of 12.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-3 forward started for a Fighting Irish squad that made it to the Sweet 16 before falling to the TCU Horned Frogs. She will have the opportunity to build depth at the power forward spot behind Angel Reese, who reunited with TCU guard Hailey Van Lith as she was taken by the Sky later in the first round.
Coulibaly, a 2-year starter for the Aggies, was taken with the No. 22 pick in this year's draft. The 6-foot guard and 2-time All-SEC selection has earned starting spots with Texas A&M and Auburn. Coulibaly can be a solid defensive option for the Sky alongside their youthful big duo of Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, who were two of the leading defensive rebounders in last year's rookie class. She can only add to a two-guard group that features three new additions in Ariel Atkins, Kia Nurse, Rebecca Allen.
Sky add to their foundation of the future, shore up both sides of the ball
The Sky will have plenty of young but talented players to look out for after adding four new faces through the draft.
The addition of Coulibaly can help shore up a Sky defense that took eighth place in the WNBA with a defensive rating of 103.5 last season. Atkins, a 2-time All-Star with the Washington Mystics, can help guide Chicago's defense in the right direction. Still, the Sky needed to add players who could take pressure off Reese, Cardoso and center Elizabeth Williams. Westbeld can only strengthen the Sky's big rotation, which can be one of its biggest strengths heading into next season should Cardoso and Reese continue to show the signs of improvement they flashed in their respective offseason opportunities.
The Sky have two open spots before the start of the WNBA's training camp. They will also have three players on training camp deals, including a potential steal in former Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks guard Arella Guirantes. While the Sky still have a decent amount of cap room remaining, they may need to make a few tough decisions before they kick off their 2025 campaign against the Indiana Fever on May 17.
