The Chicago Sky added to an "insane" free agency period with the signings of guards Courtney Vandersloot and Kia Nurse. Vandersloot, a seven-time assist champion and five-time All-WNBA selection, will be a solid fit alongside the Sky's young big duo of Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. Nurse can be a fantastic spark plug for Chicago if they choose to bring her off the bench.
The Sky will still have a small amount of room to work with as they look to expand upon their long-range capabilities.
Chicago can look to one of its three selections in the 2025 WNBA Draft. They selected guard Brynna Maxwell, a sharpshooter and a career 43% shooter for Gonzaga and Utah, in the second round of last year's draft but released her before the start of the season. Chicago may be able to look to a former teammate of Maxwell's in Gianna Kneepkens or a former Illinois guard in Aaliyah Nye if they need extra knockdown 3-point shooters later in the second round.
Rebecca Allen's shooting will make her an excellent fit off the bench
The Sky traded Lindsay Allen and the rights to Nikolina Milić in exchange for Allen last month. She averaged 7.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in 18 games and as many starts for the Phoenix Mercury last season. The 6-foot-2 guard steadied her 3-point shooting at about 36% on about four attempts per game last season. She hit 50% or more of her 3-point shots seven times last year, including when she hit a season-high five long-range shots against the New York Liberty.
The Sky will need as much help from the 3-point line as they can get heading into next season.
They finished at the bottom of the league in attempts per game with just under 15 during their 2024 campaign. They would log their second-lowest 3-point percentage in franchise history at just above 32%. It was a far cry from where they were just one season before, which saw them log the third-highest percentage in franchise history with the help of a few notable scoring guards. Last year's Sky squad was just below the 2008 Sky, who ranked last in the WNBA in 3-point makes per game and were led from the arc by guard Jia Perkins.
Allen can immediately contribute to a squad that needed help from everywhere but the right corner. She can only become more effective if paired up with a reliable playmaker who can kick to her when she's open on the arc.
