After missing the playoffs, the Chicago Sky made the controversial decision to let go head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon forged an immediate bond with rookie Angel Reese and put Chennedy Carter in a position to have a resurgence and become the Sky’s most effective offensive weapon. She led the Sky to a 13-27 record while Kamilla Cardoso, Angel Reese, and Chennedy Carter all missed games with injuries, and the team lost Marina Mabrey at the trade deadline.

Thus, the decision to let her go after just one season came as a surprise to many fans and players alike. Angel Reese was particularly vocal about it, putting pressure on the organization to find another coach their franchise player would approve of. Former Las Vegas Aces assistant coach Tyler Marsh seems to be just that.

Marsh has a stacked resume and a great reputation as a player development coach. Despite the unfortunate way Weatherspoon’s stint with the Chicago Sky ended, she already has another big coaching opportunity lined up.

Teresa Weatherspoon will be one of the six head coaches for Unrivaled

Unrivaled, a new women’s basketball league founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, has already marked several successes before even playing a single game. A number of big names, like Chelsea Gray, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Plum, joined the league, they have plenty of funding and were even able to lure front-office personalities away from WNBA jobs.

Unrivaled will feature six teams and just announced the head coaches for those teams: Phil Handy, Adam Harrington, Nola Henry, DJ Sackmann, Andrew Wade, and Teresa Weatherspoon. Joining Unrivaled is a huge opportunity for Weatherspoon.

Not only will it allow her to potentially coach Angel Reese again, but it will also give her the opportunity to be a part of one of the next big women’s basketball leagues in the U.S. Unrivaled does not only feature a new format but also possibilities for players to earn higher salaries without having to play overseas.

If Unrivaled is as successful as it promises to be, it will be a huge win for the world of professional women’s basketball and the WNBA. With Unrivaled, fans would be able to watch some of the WNBA’s best players all in one place during the WNBA’s offseason. Becoming a part of that after her first head coaching job in the WNBA did not work out, is great news for Weatherspoon.
